What is a “Play” it Forward Program?
“Play” it forward programs are extracurricular student activities designed
to provide quality care for children while enhancing student learning and
enjoyment. “Play” it forward programs are provided by outside vendors and
can include art, science and music enrichment, sports programs, drama, etc
or can be a one time special event such as a mother/daughter crafting night,
family science event or a first aid class. Schools choose which programs
meet the interests, time demands and budgets of their families and offer
them as options for their students.
How is a “Play” it Forward Program different from other enrichment programs?
These enrichment programs are contracted to outside vendors, therefore
unburdening teachers and administrators from extracurricular
duties. Participating vendors are required to provide all promotional and
marketing materials (i.e. posters, flyers, registration tables etc), student
registration, class set up, clean up and instruction. Parents are able to
register their children through participating organizations and school
communication folders. The school only provides a means to communicate the
program to students and parents and a sufficient room to host the program.
Furthermore, each vendor is required to donate a percentage of program fees
to the school or PTA to help meet the growing demands of fundraising. This
creates a fun and unique way to raise funds for schools, clubs and even
scholarship programs.
How does a “Play” it Forward Program help parents?
By implementing “play” it forward programs, schools are not only helping to
unburden staff and fundraise, but also providing much needed supplemental
care for today’s busy families. An extra hour or two of before or after
school enrichment may free families from the need to find additional daycare
resources for their children. Furthermore, parents will be connected to
outside vendors, such as My Art Workshop, that not only provide enrichment
programs, but also classes, camps, birthday parties and group activities.
How do I get my school or organization involved in a “Play” it Forward
program?
There are many vendors throughout Colorado that are experts in providing
quality enrichment programs for schools, but have not taken steps to become
“play” it forward programs. My Art Workshop has been a pioneer in adapting
our art enrichment program, My Art Club, into a “play” it forward program by
providing all materials, handling registration, staffing the program and
adding the fundraising element to enrichment. If you currently use outside
vendors for enrichment programs and special events, let them know you’d like
to see their program become a “play” it forward program.
Is My Art Club the only option for after school enrichment that “plays” it
forward?
It shouldn’t be. There is no reason that any of the before and after school
enrichment programs being offered at your school can’t “play” it forward. My
Art Workshop will be more than happy to help your school or organization get
other programs on board.
